Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) Gear Up For Strike – Official Press Release

At a National Delegates Meeting held in Kumasi on Tuesday , May 10 , 2011, the Coalition of Concerned Teachers ( CCT) decided to embark on strike on the 12th May, 2011 based on the following reasons:

1 . That , Ghanaian Teachers are not happy with the quantum of their basic pay on the Single Spine Salary Structure ( SSSS) and the general conditions of service.

2 . That , Ghana Education Service ( G .E . S ) has constantly been delaying on the promotion of teachers . This has resulted in some teachers’ promotion locked up for two years .

3 . That , the 15% Teachers Retention Premium ( RTP) is tantamount to ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul ’ in that it was only a replacement of the Professional Allowance and it is also taxable . The CCT sees this on the part of the Government as unfortunate.

4 . That , Ghana Education Service ( G .E . S ) failed to provide accurate data to Fair Wages and Salaries Commission on teachers who have additional responsibilities. This has created distortions on the salary levels of teachers.

5 . That , Propaganda statements made by government officials which sought to create the impression that teachers are better off and happy with the 15% retention premium is a farce.

6 . That , Ghana National Association of Teachers ( GNAT ) leadership has failed to adhere to the recommendations made by CCT on the 20th April meeting held at the GNAT Headquarters, Accra , especially the resignation of the General Secretary , Mrs. Irene Duncan Adanusa .

7 . That , in pursuant to a letter sent to Government by CCT dated May 2 , 2011 asking Government to respond promptly to the concerns of teachers and subsequent Government refusal to act , has left teachers no option than to withdraw their services , effective Thursday, May 12 , 2011.

  1. All teachers should come together and fight the course of teachers concerning their condition of service especially, pay system.

  2. Teachers are our own enemies. While some are fighting others are pulling them back all in the name of the children we teach. The problem is that their parents are also fighting for theirs whilst others are insulting teachers simply because teachers are not going to “detain” their wards for them to close from their work place.

  3. Teachers in the country must not think the Government of will spoonfeed them if they don”t use the legimate force to demand their right, hence WAHALA continuning hence strikes always and any time. Teachers must also bear in mind that C C T is not an association but just a pressure group.
