Tamale unpaid teachers threaten strike

Some aggrieved teachers in the Northern
Region have given government one-week
ultimatum to pay their 14-month
accumulated salaries.

Failure to meet their demand within the
stipulated period will lead to industrial
action, they have warned.

According to them, they have since
September 2011 not been paid their salaries
and are surviving on allowances.

At a news conference in Tamale, the
spokesperson for the aggrieved teachers,
Baako Yahaya said their patience had been
overstretched.

He disclosed that the underpaid teachers
have since after their appointment in 2011
been receiving GhC 300 allowances and there
were no signs of placing them on the right
salary scale.

He said: “After we received our appointments
in September 2011 and after working for
about 14 to 15 months with the Ghana
Education Service, it is baffling to know that
we have not been put on the right salary
scale.”

“We therefore implore on the government to
come to our aid at this difficult time by
facilitating the payment of our arrears and
placement onto the appropriate salary
scheme as soon as possible,” he maintained.
