This year’ s Basic Education Certificate Examination ( BECE )
begins today , June 16 with 422 , 946 final- year junior high
school ( JHS ) students writing the examination . The figure
represents an increase of 31 , 864 over last year ’ s total number
of 391 , 082.
The 2014 BECE candidates, who are from 12, 562 public and
private schools , are made up of 223 ,765 males and 199 , 181
females . They are expected to write the examination at 1, 437
centres across the country.
Two papers will be written every day from June 16 to 20 ,

According to statistics made available to the media by the
West African Examinations Council ( WAEC ) , 391, 730
candidates will write the Information and Communications
Technology ( ICT ) paper , while 171, 274 candidates will write
the French paper .
The Ashanti Region is presenting 83 ,859
candidates , the highest this year , followed by the Greater
Accra Region with 74 , 139 candidates, while the Central Region
comes third with 43, 921 candidates.
The Northern Region has the fourth highest number of
candidates of 43 ,694 , with the Western Region presenting
41 ,991 candidates , while 41, 522 candidates will write the
examination in the Eastern Region .
In the Brong Ahafo Region ,
39 ,573 candidates are expected to write the examination ;
31 ,866 in the Volta Region and 19, 009 in the Upper East
The Upper West Region has the least number of 12 ,372
candidates writing the examination .
